Yacht racing may appear slow to land-based spectators, but adrenalin levels on board tell a totally different story…
With specifications tightly-regulated for every class; competitors and teams must exploit every possible advantage: a tough call because the winds between them and the finish line are totally invisible. A solid mix of insight and experience is required to anticipate competitors’ strategies or challenges – while the whole flotilla is trying to detect any helpful wind-shifts or changes in water currents.
Life also comes complete with wind-shifts. To sense the right time:
to open businesses;
to begin community-transforming projects;
to bring political change;
to make investments;
to make those calls to prospects;
to even tentatively ask for a first date…
And catching these wind-shifts can rewrite our future.
One night, when Jesus introduced totally-permanent possibilities from being born again, a Jewish teacher called Nicodemus got tangled up in obstetrics: “How can an adult re-enter his mother’s womb???”
Jesus’ response described the invisible, unpredictable wind; inviting him to explore God rebuilding life from within: invisibly at first – as in early pregnancy – to affirm our privacy, our personal value and our forgiveness. Then, as he begins to radiate his life and love through us, we launch into this energy stream and begin participating in an eternal adventure: of unexpectedly discovering his creativity, compassion, justice, wisdom, respect and humour emerging; never to simply prove points, but so anyone may recognise him and respond to him.
Because his wind-shifts are there for them as well.
